Liam Hillen passed away on Christmas Day 2018 – just a week before he was due to be lauded as the original painter of the Free Derry wall at a 50th anniversary exhibition.
Mr Hillen, who was 69, was only recently recognised as the original painter of the "You Are Now Entering Free Derry" slogan.
The Museum of Free Derry is currently marking the 50th anniversary of Free Derry Corner, which originated in 1969, the same time that Mr Hillen painted the gable wall at the age of 19.
Members of his family have now spoken out for the first time since his death.
